Mệnh đề danh từ trong tiếng Anh

Mệnh đề danh từ trong tiếng Anh là mệnh đề có thể đóng vai trò như một danh từ trong câu. Câu chứa mệnh đề danh từ thường là một câu phức.

1. Mệnh đề danh từ là gì?

– Noun clause là gì? Mệnh đề danh từ trong tiếng Anh là mệnh đề có thể đóng vai trò như một danh từ trong câu. Câu chứa mệnh đề danh từ thường là một câu phức. Trong câu, danh từ làm nhiệm vụ gì thì mệnh đề danh từ làm nhiệm vụ đó.

– Mệnh đề danh ngữ thường bắt đầu bằng các từ như if, whether hoặc các từ để hỏi như what, why, when, where và từ that.

Cấu trúc: … that/ If/ whether/ Từ để hỏi + S + V …

2. Chức năng của mệnh đề danh từ

a. Mệnh đề danh từ làm chủ ngữ:

That/ Whether/Từ để hỏi … + S + V1 + (O) + V2 + …

Lưu ý: khi dùng mệnh đề danh từ, động từ chính luôn chia ở số ít

Ví dụ:

+ What she wants to do is her business.

(Cô ta muốn làm cái gì là chuyện của cô ta)

+ That Allen didn’t come to my party makes me very sad.

(Chuyện Allen không tới dự tiệc khiến tôi buồn muốn chết)

b. Làm tân ngữ trong câu:

S1 + V1 + that/ if … + S2 + V2
Ví dụ: I still wonder if he likes me or not.

(Tôi vẫn tự hỏi liệu anh ấy có thương tôi hay không)

c. Bổ nghĩa cho giới từ trong câu:

S1 + V1 (+ Adj) + Preposition + that/ if … + S2 + V2

Ví dụ: Their decision depends on what they think.

(Quyết định của họ phụ thuộc vào suy nghĩ của họ)

d. Làm bổ ngữ cho chủ ngữ

S1 + to be + That/ if … + S2 + V …

Ví dụ:

The main point of the speech is why people should do the morning exercise.

(Điểm chính của bài diễn văn là tại sao con người nên tập thể dục buổi sáng)

e. Bổ nghĩa cho tính từ

S1 + to be + Adj + That/ if … + S2 + V …

Ví dụ: I am happy (that) you’ve decided to come here.

(Tôi rất vui khi anh quyết định đến đây)

f. Làm ngữ đồng vị

Ví dụ: It seems to bother the teacher that all the students are being too quiet.

(Dường như việc tất cả học sinh đều quá yên lặng làm phiền giáo viên)

3. Cách thành lập mệnh đề danh từ

– Khi chuyển câu trần thuật sang mệnh đề danh từ, ta thêm that

Ví dụ: Susan didn’t come to work. Her boss was very angry.

→ That Susan didn’t come to work makes her boss angry.

(Việc Susan không đi làm làm sếp tức giận)

– Nếu là câu hỏi Yes/ No thì khi chuyển sang mệnh đề danh từ, ta dùng if hoặc whether, khi đó câu hỏi sẽ bỏ đi trợ động từ và động từ chính được chia theo thì.

Ví dụ: I wonder, ‘Does she remember me?’

→ I wonder if she remembers me.

(Tôi tự hỏi không biết cô ấy có nhớ tôi không)

– Nếu câu hỏi có từ để hỏi thì ta chỉ cần chuyển mệnh đề sau từ để hỏi thành câu trần thuật.

Ví dụ: What is the point of this speech?, Martin wants to know.

→ Martin wants to know what the point of this speech is.

(Martin muốn biết mục đích của bài phát biểu này là gì)

4. Một số lưu ý về mệnh đề danh từ

– Các mệnh đề danh từ thường bắt đầu với đại từ, các liên từ phụ thuộc, hoặc các từ khác.

+ Đại từ quan hệ: that, which, who, whom, whose, what

+ Đại từ quan hệ không xác định: whoever, whomever, whatever, whichever, whether, if

+ Đại từ nghi vấn: who

+ Tính từ nghi vấn: what

+ Trạng từ nghi vấn: how

+ Liên từ phụ thuộc: how, if, when, whenever, where, whether, why

– Đôi khi từ giới thiệu được ngầm hiểu.

Ví dụ: Daria told me she was going to be late.

→ Daria told me (that) she was going to be late.

(Daria nói với tôi rằng cô sẽ đến muộn)

– Một số mệnh đề danh từ, đặc biệt là những mệnh đề được sử dụng làm chủ ngữ, bắt đầu với “that”, gần như không thực hiện chức năng trong câu. Trong trường hợp này, hãy thêm the fact hoặc the idea trước nó.

Ví dụ: That we were late to class really upset the teacher.

→ The fact that we were late to class really upset the teacher.

(Chúng tôi đã trễ đến lớp thực sự làm buồn giáo viên)

– Các mệnh đề câu hỏi: trong mệnh đề danh từ, ngay cả khi mệnh đề chính là một câu hỏi, mệnh đề phụ thuộc luôn được viết dưới dạng câu trần thuật khẳng định.

Ví dụ:

+ Where is your father? (Bố của bạn ở đâu?)

→ Do you know where your father is?

(Bạn có biết cha mình ở đâu không?)

NOT: Do you know where is your father?

+ When did you do that? (Khi nào bạn làm việc đó?)

→ We all asked when you did that.

(Tất cả chúng tôi đều hỏi khi bạn chỉ định điều đó)

NOT: We all asked when did you assign that.

Trừ khi mệnh đề danh từ nằm trong dấu ngoặc kép
