Ngày 5/6/1911, Nguyễn Tất Thành lấy tên gọi là Văn Ba hay biệt danh anh Ba rời bến Nhà Rồng (Sài Gòn xưa) trên con tàu Đô đốc Latouche-Tréville lên đường sang Pháp để học hỏi những tinh hoa và tiến bộ từ các nước phương Tây cho việc thực hiện công cuộc giải phóng Việt Nam khỏi ách thuộc địa của Thực dân Pháp.

Vào ngày 5/6/1972, Đại Hội đồng Liên Hiệp Quốc đã chọn ⅚ hằng năm là Ngày Môi trường Thế giới và giao cho Chương trình Môi trường của Liên Hiệp Quốc (United Nations Environment Programme – UNEP) có trụ sở tại Nairobi, Kenya tổ chức kỷ niệm sự kiện này.
